First there are the materials. He affixes small
canvases to larger ones, and attaches lamps, clocks, fabrics, and
photographs to them. But in the end it's all about paint. Jeff
Carson's obsession with layering paint on paint gives his art its
unique sculptural feel. Working on large canvases, he dominates
his work with masculine brush strokes of earth-tone reds, browns,
and yellows. His themes are just as earth-related (or just plain
earthy): seasons, time, gravity, and toilets. Carson takes
advantage of the darkness of the Salvation Theatre, traditionally
a music and theatre venue, by rigging his canvases with lighting
fixtures to render them dramatic and alluring nightlights. (JO)
Note: Artist reception is Fri 6.20 (7-10pm).
