Artist Jay Brockman recently accepted into the Art Rental and
Sales Gallery’s upcoming group exhibition, Show 5 at the Los Angeles
The Art Rental and Sales Gallery at
the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has invited local artist
Jay Brockman to exhibit his Los Angeles streetscape paintings at their
next group exhibition, Show 5, scheduled to open on March 19, 2004.
The one-month exhibition in the Art Rental and Sales Gallery is located on
the lower level, Leo S. Bing Center, Los Angeles County Museum of Art on
5905 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. The artist’s reception on
Friday, March 19th from
6:30pm – 8:30pm
is open to the general public and the
exhibition ends on April 22, 2004. All of the artworks will be available
to anyone to purchase and Los Angeles County Museum of Art members have
the privilege to rent for an inexpensive bi-monthly fee.
“Jay Brockman’s work lies within the great tradition of landscape painting,”
comments Andy Moses, a contemporary Los Angeles artist. “He does however,
give it a decidedly 21st century twist with it’s contemporary urban LA landscape
viewed from a car, which is how one views landscapes in LA. Jay’s work
captures a particular feel of LA the way Hockney or Ruscha does.”
Jay Brockman’s streetscapes are reminiscent of Ed Ruscha's early Hollywood series
with orange skies and contrasting landscapes but deviate with a unique use of
perspective as viewed by a traveling motorist. From afar, the paintings offer a
photo graphic quality which upon closer examination is cleverly contrasted by
concise and gestural brushstrokes. Balancing between realist and painterly,
Brockman creates the illusion of space by providing subtle and effective indicators
of what the viewer expects to see in the depths of the familiar streetscapes.
